Sumeet is returning to The Shala to share an evening of Yoga Nidra and music!
Join musician and teacher Sumeet Banerji for a night of sound and posture exploration.
The session begins with a brief discussion about Yoga Nidra, followed by breathing exercises and optional yin-oriented postures. As the session progresses, the focus will shift from instruction to music and storytelling. The musical set was conceived as a way to allow the body and nervous system to relax and reset.
Presenting instruments from all over the world, this event will be rooted in both ancient and modern musical traditions to present a set tailored to the community of Yoga Shala.
The Eight Limbs: Pranayama
The third limb of the Ashtanga Yoga path is Pranayama. In Sanskrit, the word Pranayama comes from the following roots:
Prana: “ life force”; also often translated simply as “breath”
Ayama: “extending”, “stretching”, “controlling”
Therefore, Pranayama is the conscious regulation or extension of the breath, which allows us to balance our emotions, and find stillness of the mind. Not to mention to increase our vitality (“life force”)!
Pranayama is an essential part of our yoga practice. You can start dipping your toes into different techniques every Saturday after Mysore, when we sit together as a community to explore the power of the breath.
